as much as i admire Eco, i think i disagree... the hero is the one who just gets on with the job without thinking about it too much... a certain amount of mindlessness would seem to be an essential ingredient...
the word 'Hero' is very overused these days. There are some *real* heroes out there - often unsung - especially in the emergency services who perform heroic deeds as part of their day job. Certainly they are not 'heroes by mistake'.
