Yes, Dashiell Hammett has a series featuring the Continental Op. He works for a detective agency, and the reader never learns his name, or so I've heard. I've only read one or two of the stories so far, and his name was never mentioned--not even when he was talking to his fellow operatives.
Bill Pronzini was who i was thinking of; he has a series of novels starring the detective with no name... undoubtedly inspired by the Continental Op but not as good...
The Man with No Name.
ReplyDeleteisn't there a mystery series about the no name detective?....

ReplyDeleteMudpuddle,
ReplyDeleteRight! I had forgotten about him. I've read several of Hammett's stories, but I don't remember reading any of Pronzini's.
One of my fave characters - Clint Eastwood as 'The Man with No Name'.
ReplyDeleteOf course great characters don't really need names..... do they?
