Wooden decks too.... Imagine an X-Wing on full boost plus afterburner to take off from a short deck.... The whole ship would just burst into flames!
One of my favorite bits of Star Wars is subtle -- it's the radio chatter when the pilots are enroute to the Death Star, and during the attack. It has a WW2-like fuzziness about it.
