He did indeed - and probably saved quite a few lives in the process. Mankind is the product generations of conflict (of one kind or another). The surprising thing, to me at least, is how peaceful we are - mostly. We can be incredibly violent and destructive but, most of the time, not so much.
Maybe it was a simple guilt thing? That emotion does do some good from time to time....
