I have the vague memory of travelling on steam trains as a child (in the 60's) before they changed to diesel and diesel-electric. I did ride on a steam train in Yorkshire about 20 years ago with my then girlfriend on holiday which was nostalgic fun. Shame it was only a short trip - but it ended in a small village with a great independent bookshop so all good!
i took the rain from San Francisco to Cleveland once... didn't check out the locomotive, tho... that was in'61
