@ Marianne: The 80's where great for the music - not so good for the politics or the economy though, but I guess that's one reason why we *had* great music to begin with!
@ Stephen: LOL = although I do appreciate quality in-game music....
I got into music as more than a casual listener around 1972-73, so initially liked things like Prog Rock. Later I moved onto Punk, New Wave, AOR and the New Romantics. I like all kinds of music these days - but my heart will always beat best in the 80's.
I really need to sit down and do a course in prog rock listening -- my favorite podcaster, Tom woods, will do a once-a-year episode just about prog rock with one of his friends (and one of my favorite authors), and I don't know anyone they're talking about but kinda want to. Have you ever explored Japanese citypop or synthwave?
I once heard that the more restricting and bad politics and economy is, the more glamourous and colourful are the arts. I think there might be some truth in that.
@ Stephen: When I tagged along with my older brother & his friends to record shops you could always find me in the Prog rock section looking through records by Pink Floyd & Yes.... That probably informed by love of bands like Tangerine Dream & Tomita. The only Japanese 'pop' I listened to in the 80's & 90's was probably in soundtracks to Anime movies like 'Ghost in the Shell', 'Akira' and such. I still have some of the soundtracks on CD.
@ Marianne: I'd heard that too and agree that there's definitely some (if not actually a lot) of truth in that. Bad times = Good music.
Oh, the memories.
ReplyDeleteSo grateful to GTA Vice City for introducing me to that era. Ditto GTA San Andreas and seventies rock.
