They...both led to dictatorships and lots of murder, so I'll take a pass. You can sell me on 1776, though. ;-)

1776 and after wasn't exactly bloodless....! [something I need to read MUCH more about - especially *this* year for LOTS of reasons!]

I think it'll depend on how the midterms are handled. If the expected level of government/MAGA interference is low and the Democrats do as well as expected and start turning the ship around.... things *might* start to settle down. However....... well, things might start getting nasty if Democracy isn't allowed to take its course. Plus (of course) the MAGA bigwigs might start to panic once they realise that accountability might FINALLY be coming.

1776 involved a war of independence, yes, but not mass executions to persecute ideological foes -- though some loyalists were roughly treated (p as I remember.

As for Democrats turning the ship around, I admire your...optimism. Twenty years ago, I voted straight-line Democrat because I was against the war on terror and the expanding security state....only to see Obama et al continue every malignant foreign policy, COMPOUND its mistakes (re: Syria, Somalia, Libya) and then begin using the government (specifically, the IRS) to attack conservatives. A pox on both their houses.

I hit post before I was done -- some loyalists had their property seized, were forced into exile, etc. Far cry from being beheaded.

Oh, I think that the Democratic 'establishment' are effectively toast from now on. I doubt if very many people trust them to instigate the changes in your country that need to happen. But I think there are 3 options going forward: things stay pretty much as they are, things get worse or things improve. I'm hoping that things improve (for everyone's sake) and the only way for that to happen to to get rid of MAGA, have accountability for all of the shit they've pulled, and then fix the *many* problems in your system that have been ignored or exploited for FAR too long. I think there's an appetite for it, the question is are the Democrats up for some root & branch restructuring? Not the old guard, but maybe some of the new kids on the block...

As to 1776 and all that... I need to read up about it. I doubt VERY much that it was a 'nice' Revolution - but I'm willing to be proven wrong.... [lol]

I'll be glad when the old guard on both sides dies.

Re: 1776 -- I don't really see it as a revolution. The men who were running the country afterwards were the same planter-lawyers who had power/authority before. What 1776 settled was the role of Parliament/the King in running the States....which is NONE. France and Russia were different because other classes were trying to SEIZE power. That's why Burke (and Adams) were for the American revolution and against the French -- one had stability more or less baked in, at least until mass democracy and then Lincoln happened.

Both didn't end well for anybody, neither the people nor the leaders.

True. 'Conflict resolution' isn't our best skill, is it?

Definitely not.
