Hey, cool, I didn't know you were a vegetarian. Which kind? My daughter's one too. She made a conscious choice around age 9 and has stuck with it. I figure it must be a recessive gene since both her parents are meat and taters type people. :-) Anyway, today she discovered the possibility of beef fat in her favorite chocolate doughnuts and was traumatized to think she might have eaten part of a cow. I try really hard to check every label, but some things still slip by. I am amazed at how pervasively animal products show up in things you would think are vegetarian. Like green beans, around here, people cook them in a pan with a little bacon grease. My daughter tries to make most of what she eats so she'll know what's in it, but when we're out running around and need to grab a bite to eat, people get annoyed when we ask if something on the menu contains animal products. Another example, brocolli and cheddar soup being made with chicken stock.
I think they add the animal products for flavoring, but if you ask me, they're just being lazy. With all the spices in the world available to flavor things, they shouldn't need to use animal products. I can never remember the various names for vegetarians, "vegan, ovo-lacto," etc. My daughter doesn't eat any type of animal product where the animal had to be killed to consume it. So she does some dairy and non-fertilized eggs. She won't drink cow's milk, she uses soy milk, and she won't eat cheese with rennet in it. It's gets to be a little much for me sometimes, but more power to her if she wants to be that diligent.

I tend not to give myself too many labels. I just don't eat meat, or fish or fowl. I eat eggs, drink milk & eat cheese (not to mention honey). Sometimes I check for things like rennit or geletine but I'm not totally strict on things like that. I do like to know what my food is being cooked in though...

What kind...? You mean there's more than one kind...? [chuckle].
I'm kind of a newbie - only about 8 years, though I've never been much of a meat eater...
You're right about animal products showing up in the strangest of places.. Some types of sauce contain anchovies... though goodness knows why..
