Thank GOD. Keith Olbermann makes fun of that story too - though he doesn't refuse to cover it.
I just don't understand, in a world where we've got Iraq, Afghnistan, Darfur, a President with all time low approval ratings, a health care crisis, failing schools... that PARIS FUCKING HILTON - a skeezer whose shot to stardom was a homemade porno tape - gets top story???
Indeed. Whatever happened to real news - rather than the antics of media whores (in more ways than one).
Why are the purile 'goings on' of so-called celebrities *so* important to people? Is it just because they don't want to face the cold reality of the real world? Are people that scared by reality....
I think it's cyclical... It's on the news, so we are led to believe that we are supposed to care. So many people, doing what they think they are supposed to do, start caring... pretty soon, it just seems like we really do care...
Corporate advertising has a lot to do with it too... News channels are afraid to cover boring news because then viewership (and ad revenue) declines.
Oh PLease..those MEN!!! Those creepy lousy men....That Joe is horrendous! That's all he really likes to do is talk about Paris, and Rosie and Lindsey and God Knows Who Else...! He used to be on after Keith Olbermann who is truly one of The Good Guys....and I couldn't watch Joe S. then....Now he is in Imus' old time slot....HELP US OH LORD---(If there is one...)
Why don't we have separate news channels for the news we're interested in? We already have celebrity news shows, so why are the "regular" news shows covering that? We could have all politics, all business, all sports, etc. news programs. I would tune in to each of them to find out what's going on and not be subjected to the crap of the rich and famous.

That's pretty good. She was pretty close to a Peter Finch/Howard Beale moment.
Peter Finch: I'm as mad as Hell & I won't take it any more...?

".. mad as hell ..." -- yep, that's the one.

Our late night news shows tend to be much more 'serious' and actually offer in depth reporting & differences of viewpoint.
I particularly like Newsnight on BBC2 @10:30pm.
Breakfast News tends to be light & fluffy (although sometimes *too* light) with the early evening news somewhere in between.
I don't think that the ratings of News Shows has much impact on them though - at least over here!
