Funny. Yeah, we're in trouble where jobs are concerned. Are things as bad over there? So glad I have 2 jobs, even though only one really pays me anything.

I don't think that things are half as bad as some of the news stories make out. I think that comparing this recession (at least my second if not my third) to the 1930's is laughable. Wherever I go the roads are packed with cars and the stores are packed with shoppers - who are actually buying things. Maybe its different in other parts of the country but here it seems pretty OK.

I'm personally lucky in that I have a secure job which pays reasonably well. As inflation has dropped to almost nothing I actually have more disposable income and cheaper things to spend it on. As I said, I'm pretty lucky.

The news said this morning that when the figures come out later it will show that the economy began to recover in May. Things are, apparently, getting better - though it'll take a while to get back to pre-crash levels. The rest of Europe is already bouncing back so from over here it looks like the worst is over bar the paying off of the huge debts the government ran up to buy our way out of things.

I live in a depressed area of the country. The wages are abnormally low, always have been and there aren't very many jobs for people in the middle, educationally speaking. You either have to have medical, legal or academic degrees or you work minimum wage jobs. The national average for homeownership is 70%, here it's 30%.
