I actually have a set of postcards from Gettysburg that include this picture: It's of Col. Joseph Chamberlain leading his Main Regiment down Little Round Top on the second day of Gettysburg. He was charged with preventing rebel forces from flanking the Union army (as they might if they took that hill), but ran out of ammunition after repeated assaults on the part of the Confederates. Finally, he ordered a bayonet charge.

Before the war he was a teacher of rhetoric and oratory at Boudwin college.

(Jeff Daniels played him in the film Gettysburg -- have you ever seen it?)

One of the reasons this caught my eye was that I recognised the painting. I discovered it - and other Civil War paintings by Mort Kunstler - when I found a discarded calender of his work. I was very impressed.

I have indeed seen the movie and was most impressed by Jeff Daniels in the role.

Would you believe I grew up getting dragged to every Revolutionary and Civil War battle field by my mother, but I don't believe I've ever seen a movie about the Civil War? I had an unbelievably bizarre Civil War dream once. In it, I was a soldier for I believe the Confederate side. I was in a tent listening to the officers discuss troop locations and planned attacks. I was given a note to take to some other officer to let him know where to locate his troops the next day for a major battle. Somehow traveling through the woods at night I got lost and scared and just ran off AWOL. I never delivered the message. As a result of me not getting the message to the officer, a great many men died because of me. The strange thing was, even though I was having the dream and dreaming it in the first person, I knew I was not that soldier. I thought it was the most bizarre dream because I have never dreamed about wars, the military or anything like that. So a few days go by and I'm talking on the phone to my then newly discovered half-sister and I begin to relay this weird dream to her. She cuts me off and finishes describing the whole dream to me, then says, "that was me, I was that soldier. I've lived my whole life with the guilt of what I did." What do you make of that?

That's *very* odd V V.

I often have combat dreams, but that's probably because of the type of games I play and the books I read more than anything else.

Yeah, I'd never had one before and I've not had one since. It's just one of those weird things that happens in my life about every 5-10 years.
