Is the blueness a parallel to the indigenous people of Avatar? If so, it's an apt comparison. I've read interviews with Cameron that said that was his intent.

I don't know. There might be a connection but AFAIK lots of native peoples painted themselves various shades of blue. I'm guessing that the artist was representing a Native American in his traditional garb.
