Some of the early WW1 uniforms did really show the disconnect between what people thought the war was going to be like and the actual brutal reality.
They should have had more of an idea though after the experiences across the world. Of course cavalry where the most blatant aspect of the disconnect when the British in particular expected them to open up and exploit any breakthroughs. The few times they tried it they were massacred - as you might expect with a horseman being a bloody big target!

It's amazing to think they sent in cavalry in shining armor even in WW1.
