M and I were talking about people like this (tea baggers, conservatives) tonight at dinner. I don't understand how people can be so mean-spirited, selfish, and obtuse. They need to walk more than a mile in somebody else's shoes.

Part of it, I think, is the sometimes forgivable fantasy that we can live without the State. It's a bit like fish fantasizing about living without water... Part of it is the belief that if only the State didn't stand in their way or take money off them that they'd be independently wealthy or something. Again fantasy to explain away their problems - real or imagined.

It might be possible to move away from the State to some sort of Stateless structure but it would take generations to do it and I'm guessing that most people would find it less than desirable. Without a slow transition - if today's citizen's were dropped into a truly Stateless world... First there would be chaos, then people would band together in mutual support through necessity, then someone or some group would take power, then there would be constant conflict until someone eventually came out on top and created order by force - if they could. Worse case scenario - a perpetual Syria.
