We never did anything like that in the 60's. Probably because it only took 4-5 minutes for the rockets to get here from the Soviet Union. That and our cities are really close together so if one missed the other one(s) would hit anyway.
We had tornado drills in which we hid under desks, and fire drills in which we ran outside and stood in nice, orderly lines. I'm just glad we never confused the two.
Yet we have the nuke concerns here again with how much Trumplethinskin wants to pop off at the mouth to tiny dictators who suffer from delusions of grandeur. Not enough to make us start hiding under decks that would offer zero protection, but I will admit there are mornings I have woken up and been like, "Wow, survived the night, cool."
As for the intruder drills, as a teacher, this is one of the worst things about my job. I have to prepare these kids, who have already seen so much, and experienced so much trauma, for the possibility that someone might come in and shoot at us. And I have to walk into a classroom every day during the year where are no there are not enough places to hide, and there's nothing I can do about that.
@ Stephen: Fortunately tornadoes were something we never had to deal with. Oh, and I think we would've walked outside during a fire drill rather than run! Far too dangerous!!
@ Sarah: I'm sorry to have to say but you live in a very strange country and at a very strange time in its history. The whole gun and school shooting thing is something I simply cannot understand and I don't think I'm alone in that. What you can do to sort it out I don't completely know, but I do know this: these things don't happen with such regularity anywhere else in the civilised world. The only places things like this happens anywhere near as regularly are in war zones and failed states. I'm both stunned that they happen and even more stunned that no one seems to be able to do anything about it - or even THINK about doing something about it. Too weird.

i remember hiding under my desk in the early fifties: it seemed pretty immediate at the time...

the republican party is dominated by the certifiably insane, unfortunately...
Oh, I think it's MUCH more than the Republicans.
