I suspect it's about budgeting. Male lead film tend (I think) to blockbusters so cost a lot of money to make so will need to make a LOT of money to get into high profit. I'm guessing that (on average) female lead movies are lower budget and therefore don't need to make much money (comparatively) to show a higher per gender gross.

It's all about bums on seats and box-office. The quality of films is, it seems, a happy coincidence.
