Fear and excitement are practically kissing cousins -- similar physiological responses and such. Probably why roller coasters are so popular!

@ Stephen: Some definite adrenaline rush going on there. They're comparatively safe (or at least feel that way) so can probably relax a bit and 'enjoy' the action.@ Mudpuddle: There definitely seems to be a pronounced gender divide in attitude.
