The school would've been for a handful of the *very* powerful. I'm guessing that the parents wanted to know if their kids were attending properly. After all, the fate of the kingdom probably depended on it and they'd be expecting reports to prove it.

Interesting that such things would be recorded...my understanding is that papyrus was very dear in Egypt!
