Yes, Prime Minister (4)
So, almost TWO years since the last PM update and precious little to report I’m afraid! Just two more books to be added but no new Prime Ministers. Rather inevitably one of additions is about Churchill (with yet more to come) but I am hoping/expecting/planning to move a bit beyond Winston next year. I’d like to have at least a basic knowledge of most, if not all, the 20th century PMs eventually but that’s a pretty LONG-term objective. I’ll settle, for now, with an idea about the PM’s I grew up with (in effect when I started to notice such things) starting from Harold Wilson and Ted Heath. But, as always, I guess we’ll see!
Harold Macmillan (10th January 1957 – 18th October 1963)
An English Affair – Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo by Richard Davenport-Hines
Winston S. Churchill (10th May 1940 – 26th July 1945) (26th October 1951 – 5th April 1955)
Churchill and the King – The Wartime Alliance of Winston Churchill and George VI by Kenneth Weisbrode
Franklin and Winston – An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship by Jon Meacham
Young Titan – The Making of Winston Churchill by Michael Shelden
Churchill’s First War – Young Winston and the Fight against the Taliban by Con Couchlin.
Neville Chamberlin (28th May 1937 – 10th May 1940)
Chamberlain and the Lost Peace by John Charmley
Munich – The 1938 Appeasement Crisis by David Faber
Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (22nd January 1828 – 16th November 1830) (17th November 1834 – 9th December 1834)
Wellington by S G P Ward
Spencer Perceval (4th October 1809 – 11th May 1812)
The Assassination of the Prime Minister – John Bellingham and the Murder of Spencer Perceval by David C Hanrahan
Naturally even covering the well-known (modern) highlights is going to take some time and effort... But I do like a challenge, even if I fail miserably at it!
