I never thought it made much sense paying workers just above starvation levels (which is really what Capitalists want). For one thing the workforce is unmotivated and production levels are lower. For another, on basic wages people buy only the absolute necessities to live. If they were paid more - a living wage for example - not only would they be happier and much more productive - they would use their extra cash (over and above the basics) to buy stuff (including the stuff that their company makes) and save the rest - thus adding to potential money for investors... and that's not taking into account increased demand for stuff which means increased output, increased employment and increased demand.... I mean... DUH!
