I've seen this attributed to Henry David Thoreau, as well. I like the sentiment but -- having read both men -- can't buy their having actually said it. Too hopeful and earnest for Twain, not verbose enough for Thoreau.
That's the problem with quotes - especially on the Internet! They might *sound* good, but did that person actually say it? Plus quotes themselves are sometimes 'created' by false memories or made up after the fact because the person would've liked to have said it....
There's that fun meme....."Don't believe everything you read on the internet. - Aristotle", and then the picture is Abraham Lincoln or someone similarly absurd.
