That's the beauty of it. We get the worst of both worlds ... no civil liberties and a dollar that pays for less and less.

Ironic isn't it? I've been reading that the gap between rich and poor has never been so wide.

Why do poor people vote Republican...?

I've talked about it before but one of the best books that I've read on that exact subject is What's the Matter with Kansas?. In effect, Republicans were somehow able to turn hating gays and owning guns into "family values".

Weird.

But I guess it *is* a truism that we get the Government we deserve.. unfortunately!

I don't like Republicans or Democrats. The Republicans are spending like drunken sailors and the Democrats have strayed far from classical liberalism and being for the working man. They still give lip service to these values but they seem more concerned with special interest groups than anything else.

I really wish we could chuck them all and start over again.

Welcome SteinwaysMom. I hope you hang around..

I know exactly what you mean. Over here we've had basically a two party system for the best part of 100 years - not counting the multiparty war governments. Normally we have 8-12 years of one side followed by 8-12 years of the other. Not much changes.

Then we had 'New Labour' - well that quickly turned out to be a huge joke on everyone! They turned out to be new Conservatives instead and their lurch to the right forced the other right-wing party to go even further right. Now we have three parties fighting it out for the "middle ground" outdoing each other to be as bland as possible. No wonder the number of votes cast fall year on year....

We do indeed need something new - not just old wine in new bottles.
