Scott, Both France & the UK have very strict laws governing employee rights under the European Acts, which cover working hour, holiday rights, sickness pay, discrimination etc regardless of union membership/corporate status, or even legal status (ie: in theiry an illegal immigrant worker could still claim employee rights, and certainly companies have been prosecuted for breaching those rights with illegal immegrants). The UK and France also both have a high minimum wage.
We have also never claimed to be the land of opportunity where background and starting point are unimportant. In fact, we are rather well known for claiming the opposite quite often;-)
