Video Time.
Ah, the 1980's...... what a decade. I was lucky in many ways with the timing of my introduction to music. I hit pubity and my adult years in the 1970's and basically grew up with the music of the 80's with the likes of this track - Cars by Gary Newman. The times may have been pretty awful but the music was sublime. Those of you that can remember this far back just close your eyes and enjoy the feeling of nostalgia.

Really? I'm pretty much of the opinion that the 80's sucked at music. I dunno, I'd call it favoritism, but I grew up in the 90's so I'm suppose to like 90's music and I really don't like too much of that either.
I'm of the belief we're in the golden age of music, or at least we were a coupla years a go.
I'm definitely nostalgic for 80's music. Those were the formative years for my own tastes.
I'm not sure if history will show the 80's as the "best" music but it will certainly show it as seminal and original. The 80's electronic music of Depeche Mode and New Order grew into Ministry, NIN and beyond. The new wave of Duran Duran and the Cure grew into the Deftones, Korn, etc. The Police, REM, U2 all transcended their particular genereation.
But as far as best and most influential, I think early 90's will stand up to the test of time (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Jane's Addiction,etc.).
There is a great cover of "Cars" by Fear Factory. Gary Newman actually sings on it, also.
Scott - I think it has a *lot* to do when (and to an extent where) you grew up.

I haven't really like much modern music. I find most of the stuff I either hear on the radio or on the innumerable video channels to be either bland or incomprehensible (Slipknot being an example of the later). I actually buy very little contemporary music - though I have recently bought CD's by Bjork, Nora Jones & Avril Lavigne.

Ditto.

Agreed. I don't think that there *is* a 'best' period for music. My tastes are too wide for that. Over a weekend I can listen to anything from Classical to Nu-Metal....
I think the great thing I remember from the mid/late 70's to the mid 80's was the energy and originality. Punk music blew me away after the rather vapid music before it (though just about anything is vapid compared to punk) then we had the New Romantics and other New Wave variants. It was a great time to be growing up - at least musically.
Well I wouldn't call the current era the golden age because it is the "best" music, but because of the technology.
In the past we had to depend on the labels to find artists and put out their stuff. If someone didn't get discovered or the label rep that heard them didn't like them, we didn't get to hear them. Now anyone can cut a record and get it heard through the internet so the sample size that we get to hear is multiplied by hundreds. It's also good for creativity as artists that in the past market would have been "unmarketable" can now find a market that works for them through almost limitless distribution.
Good points scott......
That was one great track. I think that in my himble opinion the worst thing about 'popular music' in the last ten years is the rise of the 'manufactured' group. Pop bands are meant to be formed in parentsv back bedrooms or cold garages not in Simon Cowells garbage TV programmes!
Very true paste... It all seems part of the movement to make everything 'acessable' often regardless of talent. Even the winners of these revamped 'talent shows' are more often than not One Hit Wonders. Can you imagine one of these shows producing something like Queen or U2 from nowhere....? Hardly.
Glad you liked the music.
What a great song! You made me want to listen to my favorite 80s song, Modern English's "I Melt with You" which in turn inspired today's 80s flashback post. Thanks for the inspiration. Oh and linking back to your discussion on best music era, during the 80s, all my friends were heavily into all things 60's but I never cared very much for 60s music, I liked 50's and Big Bands stuff, still do. But the 80s rule!
I probably didn't need to listen to the song, just reading the band names in the comments is enough to bring it all back. I did though, it's brilliant and that clip is so 80's it's ridiculous.
dbackdad: The most influential would have to be the 60's wouldn't it?
