I hear music in my head fairly constantly as well. It's just always there, in the background. I don't take much notice of it unless I'm consciously thinking about it... like right now. It's currently 'Let's Dance' by David Bowie.

Kind of like having one's own internal stereo...

Glad it's not just me [grin].

For the last few days it's been a mixture of various Kate Bush sounds and 'She's in Parties' by Bauhaus.... [chuckle].

It is indeed like having an MP3 player brain implant...

I SING: when I’ve had too much to drink. - The only times in my life that I have done karaoke, I was plastered (thankfully, so that I don't remember how bad I was)

- I'm definitely with you there.

I used to 'work' backstage with a Light Opera Company. One year we went away together (cast & crew) for a weekend. Part of the entertainment was a Karaoke thing - which wasn't really fair as the cast could all sing (one girl in particular had an outstanding voice). But of course everyone had to have a 'turn' and if you didn't choose a song one was chosen for you.

Nipping that right in the bud I elected (after 'several' vodkas) to sing the Beatle song 'Yesterday' already having an advantage with the accent.... Afterwards the Technical Director came up to me and made it quite clear that I was *not* to join the cast as he needed me backstage... Apparently I could hold a tune.. [grin].

When you hear music (and there's no radio, band, irritated cat, etc.), is it like songs from bands you have heard, or is it something else? I hear music when there is a repetitive sound like an air conditioner, fan, or motor that has been at the same speed for a while, but it is not music from any band I've heard. Sometimes there are voice-like sounds, but there I do not really notice any of them being intelligible words.

I (and my psychiatrists) thought I was the only one.

Normally it's recognisable tunes - at the moment its K T Tunstall 'Feels like Home'. Sometimes its fragments of music that can drive me to distraction before they either go away or I recognise them. Sometimes its its of tunes I make up myself. My mind is too full of stuff to hear other noises or random unintelligable words.

Yeah. I must have way too much excess capacity.

Heh. Free instant downloads! *grin*

Yep. Exactly the same here. (Nothing going on at the moment, as the radio's on. If there's already music on, I don't hear anything but that, thankfully.)Mostly, it's songs I already know... but it's not like having a song tediously stuck in your head. It's just happily playing in the background, often barely noticed. Usually, they're songs I've heard at some point during the day, or something will suddenly remind me of a certain song and set that one off. I had Christmas music yesterday, for some reason...

But I quite often find amazingly complex tunes in my head that I've never heard before - usually classical. I often wish I was more musically inclined... there's loads of material in there for a composer!

That's the sort of thing that I hear. I am an amateur composer--my housemate still has some of my music from 20 years ago when I was active in it--and have tried to put some of the music in my head into scores, but I do not have a budget for the music software and the stuff I have has not yet become easy enough for me to use to be able to transcribe it from head to paper/file. The music I hear is actually more of what might be called "dance pop": heavy on the rhythm and repetitive themes in the melodies. If the words were intelligible, they'd probably have some frequent choruses in them.

Yeah... I actually hear quite a lot of this sort of stuff too, now that I think about it. There is some sort of quiet tune going on in the back of my mind at the moment, but I can't quite pick up what it is. Sometimes that happens too. It's fine if I'm not paying it any attention, but when I try to focus on what the music is, it sort of dissipates.

My, this is an odd discussion! I've never come across anyone I can talk to about it before. Strange stuff.

Now, if only there was some kind of recording device that you could just plug straight into the brain, we'd be creating all kinds of fab music. *grin*

I have to creep up on it sometimes without it 'noticing' so I can identify the tune. Sometimes it can take days. Not surprising really if you think about how much music we must hear in a lifetime.

Maybe the three of us could form a group?

I wonder how many other people hear music in their heads all the time. It can't be just us three?

The fun of blogging....

Todays music has manly been Coldplay with another tune I don't recognise ATM.

Ah, yes... where else could you discuss such things?

Forming a group would be great. We'd have endless material to draw on.

I'm starting to wonder how many other people experience this too. I remember mentioning it to people when I first noticed it at the age of about 16, and getting concerned looks in response.

Mmm, Coldplay. Your brain has good taste. *grin* I've had Ben Folds until just now, when it became some weird bouncy tune I can't identify. Almost a bit Sinatra-ish.

For some reason I've been humming a really depressing Bruce Springsteen song most of today - must be the weather [grin].

I mentioned the music thing to one of the guys @ work today - and he said "Of course I hear music - doesn't everyone?"

Skywolf said...

I was starting to wonder whether everyone did hear it, as no one ever talks about it, so maybe we all do but just don't realise. So, following this discussion, I started a poll on a message board I post at regularly. Sort of 'Do you hear music in your head all the time - yes or no?'

So far, it's about even. People either know exactly what I'm on about, or they don't. I'm having trouble distinguishing for them between hearing music all the time and just having the odd song stuck in your head. They are clearly two very different things for those of us who have music all the time... but people who don't seem to be having a little difficulty understanding what I'm on about.

Very interesting indeed. Bet you didn't know what you were starting here... *grin*

It's one of the things I like about Blogging - conversations can go just about anywhere... and often do in very unexpected ways.

It's certainly not the topic I had expected would get the most attention.

Oh... Unfortunately I had Britney in my head this morning on the bus.... But Springsteen is back now [phew].

Heh... no. It's great when a post takes off unexpectedly, though, isn't it?

And argh, it's terrible when your brain goes all treacherous on you like that. Yay for a return to Springsteen! I have some weird concoction of various tunes running through right now... can't quite pinpoint what they are.
