I've seen some pretty spectacular displays from the air at times (though not quite like your picture). I think the further North one gets the better the show can be. Pilots I know who are based up in Anchorage say they can be really amazing from there.
I'm guessing that pilots see lots of amazing things wunelle - it's certainly a perk of the job!
I've been thinking about a trip to Iceland @ some point Stardust. It's not too far away (though *very* expensive I understand) so is certainly 'do-able'. Maybe for my 50th birthday [muses].
We are firm supporters of Alaska's State tourism motto: "Alaska before you die." The fact that the lights are there as well is icing on the cake. Both are definitely on our list for our next big vacation.
