20 Things that make my Atheist Life worth living.

I was on a Blog recently where they were discussing the Meaning of Life mainly from a theistic point of view. One of the commenter’s (who I think I’ve crossed swords with before) said that Atheists had no reason to live – and should reasonably commit suicide on the spot – because they did not believe in God who is the source of all meaning. Without God, therefore, there is no possible meaning to life hence the tempting long walk off a short pier. I, of course, replied that this position was abject nonsense. To which he issued me what he undoubtedly considered to be a challenge – presumably one he didn’t think I could answer. His challenge was to produce something that made my life worth living. So I posted back a single word: Brunettes.

What I’d like to do is to expand that a bit here and list 20 things I consider it worth living for.

Books
Movies
Music
Friends
Lovers
Chocolate
Ice cream
Surprises
Sex
Computer Games
Discoveries and the expansion of human knowledge
All of the possibilities encapsulated in the word Tomorrow
The ever changing world around us
New Technology
Travel
The Natural world
Art
Laughter
The Internet

…….. and Brunettes.

Heaven must be a pretty dull place with no laughter, art, or brunettes and only God to keep one company. I must say, you've got a pretty good list.

Anyone who comes out with the argument "an Atheist has no reason to live" is a gibbering idiot begging for it to be turned back around on them ...

If there's no afterlife, get all the fun in now ! No time to waste, get cracking on the hedonism. If there is an afterlife like the god people say, what are they waiting for ! Are they so scared that they're wrong that they are hellbent on putting off the trip to Fluffy Cloud Land ?

:-)

PS ~wibble~ for brunettes.

It's that condescending tone by some Christians that just irks me to no end. As though any non-theists are just hopeless dullards, lost children waiting for guidance by some enlightened soul.

Great list. No argument with any of them ... 'cept maybe computer games. I'm not a gamer. Maybe substitute sports/fantasy sports into that entry for me.

... and redheads, especially Gillian Anderson. That mix of redhead, nerdiness, science, and skepticism is right in my wheelhouse.

Well Lance, you *ARE* a hopeless dullard, but it has nothing to do with you being an atheist.

Love bro.

He-he! Indeed. Might have something to do with being a Dbacks fan.

What an absurd premise. The whole business is fraught with untenable assumptions. Even if we grant the premise--that life has some "meaning," which premise I will NOT grant--a charlatan doesn't get to determine the meaning for anyone else (particularly when they do it so badly).

Our "reason" to live is inherent; our self-preservation instincts are incredibly strong, as are our needs to procreate. THAT's why we're here. My reason to live is that my body and mind strive very strongly toward that goal and will do so until the body fails or I intervene.

And about the only reason that it strikes me at present to intervene would be a desire not to have to live in a world with stupid fundies! ;-)

I did find myself a little irked.... [grin]

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here.... but Ms Anderson is a natural *blonde*.

Hey! You're talking about the woman I *love* here... OK, one of them anyway!

See! You *are* a philosopher... [grin]

wunelle said: Even if we grant the premise--that life has some "meaning," which premise I will NOT grant...

Definitely. Any meaning we find in the universe is what we *assign* to it. It's basically a blank canvass that we all project our own particular religion, poltics or philosophy. As far as I am concerned the universe is totally without *any* objective meaning.

In the final analysis it all bolis down to biology (hence evolution.....)

Wow, it's crazy that someone said that to you. Your life does not loose value because of your atheism. Your philosophy may have a very different take on meaning of life, but for a theists, especially, if that theist is a Christian to conclude that your life is not worth living is quiet audacious and plain wrong.

Truth remains true whether you believe it or not, so regardless of whether you believe God gives your life value or not He does and you continue to be valuable to Him.

Certainly we all see the beauty and joy of life even when we believe differently concerning its source.

"Truth remains true whether you believe it or not..."

Right.

"... so regardless of whether you believe God gives your life value or not He does and you continue to be valuable to Him."

The "truth"(lower case "t") is that Atheists find "value" in life without belief in "God"/gods. That simple demonstrable "truth" remains, as you say, "true", regardless of whether theists believe "God gives your life value", or not.
