@Cyberkitten: Actually, both those references were to the new movie. I think of it as a spaceborne action-adventure movie with Star Trek references and enjoy it on that level.

I think in some ways its an age thing. I grew up with ST:OS so can't really forgive the liberties the movie took with the ST Universe.
Indeed I think that the whole reason that the movie was made was to change history so that they could basically make new movies without reference to existing ST canon. In other words a huge lazy cop-out.

Look for an easier target, like the Vulcan fellow who never shows emotion and only looks for romance once every seven years.
(Maybe if you blow his planet up with his mom on it, he'll show some vulnerability...?)
