That's funny and sad all at the same time. M and I will be celebrating our 11th anniversary this May and we're still excited to see each other, love spending time together, and consider ourselves extremely lucky that the magic is still going strong. We have just one set of friends who are in the same type of relationship and they've been together more than 25 years. I wonder what the secret is, or if it's just luck. I know for me, even if M and I weren't partners, I still like her as a friend. I think liking the one you're with is as important as the romantic love. I've been in relationships where I was passionately in hormonal love with guys who were assholes, and I knew it, I just couldn't help the physical attraction. I'm glad I finally progressed to a healthy and balanced relationship.

I've known people who were having trouble in their relationship and decided to get married to fix the problem. When that didn't work they decided to have a child... guess what.....

I think long term relationships are part luck and part effort (but not too much I think). It's definitely important to be friends with your partner. When the love is at a low ebb it's good to have something to fall back on and wait for the love to come back.

As to being in love with unsuitable people... I invented that you know. Oh, and I invented the Friend Zone too. I really should've patented *that* sucker... [muses]

M and I just had a good snort over that last paragraph. If we lived closer, we'd be plotting to fix you up with a nice girl. We have way too many single female friends, some too tall, some too high maintenance, wait a minute, maybe you're lucky you don't live close by. ;-)

Oh, I *like* tall women - being a smidge over 6 feet myself..

Not high maintenance though.... life is far too short for that kind of thing!

It's a pity we live on opposite sides of the Big Pond or I might take you up on your offer.

Darn, we have a tall friend right at 6 feet who regularly goes to England and Scotland, but she just got engaged. He even flew over to Scotland to propose to her while she was there for Christmas break. Very romantic.

As romantic gestures go that's pretty good - especially considering the amount of snow they had around then!
