What a lot of people don't understand about U.S. history is that party membership changed a few times in our history, so that the Republicans of the 1860s are actually the Democrats of today. Republicans of the 1860s were all for big government, government intervention to help individuals (slaves) and using the federal government's power to control the states. Today's Republicans say they want small government and don't want the federal government to interfere in the lives of individuals or states, unless of course, it's a woman's vagina, then they're all over that. Membership changed in large numbers during Reconstruction (mid-1860s-1877) and again during the Civil Rights Era (1960s). There were a couple of other times when there were smaller membership changes. It's interesting to note that racism caused the major shifts in party membership both times.

Weird isn't it (or not when you think about it). They want people to effectively be totally free and self-responsible but they draw the line at women having responsibility for their own reproductive organs!
