Our political process at the national level is a mystery to me. Yesterday, for instance, I voted in the Democratic primary -- not because I care about Sanders v Clinton, but because I wanted to participate in a few local elections. On the front half, I was asked to vote for a presidential candidate. I chose, as lesser of the presented evils, Martin O'Malley. (Good Irish name, that.) Then I was asked to vote for delegates who had declared their support to so and so, and on the back side I was asked to choose..more delegates? Many of the people on the list had local offices, like the Mayor. I understand the college at the level of "Who wins this states gets so many EC votes", but the choosing of and the role of the delegates themselves....who knows?

The super delegates were developed to make sure a grassroots candidate couldn't beat a Democrat establishment candidate. The superdelegates can vote however they want. Traditionally they've always voted with the majority of the voters. This cycle most of them are coming out in support of Clinton, even before the people vote. They can switch to Sanders if they want, but the fact that so many are already in the bag for Clinton tells you the DNC is wanting her to win the nomination. As for regular delegates, they are awarded based on the vote.
