The history of early commercial aviation is probably worth poking into -- even in the 1950s people were still making films about regular passenger ship traffic, like "An Affair to Remember" and "Bon Voyage".. When, I wonder, did the airlines win over the majority of people?
The history of commercial aviation is very interesting in those early years.
They basically won the transport 'race' because of simple speed I think. Ships had the luxury but the rich (who in the early days made up most of the passengers) wanted to get there as quick as possible.
