It's a V2 IRMB (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile). Almost unstoppable - unless you caught them setting up on the ground but not a very effective weapon either from the damage or the terror aspect. But as usual with these things it showed the way of the future.
Interestingly after the initial hard sites where found and destroyed by Allied aircraft they developed a 'shoot & scoot' technique not unlike the Iraqi Scud missiles in Gulf War 1.
Yes, the V1 was essentially a bomb with wings and and engine on top. It was an early cruise missile - even dropped from aircraft! Once the initial shock was over with they proved relatively easy to intercept because they flew straight and level at a reasonably 'slow' speed and could be caught by the later generation prop fighters and the new jets.
On a personal note my Mother saw one fall on Liverpool as a child.

Nazi buzz bomb? I can't distinguish (from memory) a V1 from a V2, though..

More on both devices to come....
Didn't the V1s have wings?
