writers used to make a living, sort of, turning out this stuff... i found a stash of oldies in Granite, Or once and read them all... some of them were pretty good....
@ Mudpuddle: I've read another of Gil Brewer's works in the collection of books called 'Hard Case Crime'. It was pretty good - called 'Say it with Bullets'.
@ Fred: Probably quite a few - either under their real names or (very often) pseudonyms. As you know a lot of the classic SF authors got their breaks writing a lot of very pulpy stuff. I imagine the famous crime authors got their similar breaks in pulp crime magazines and mass produced mass market pulp novels.

I wonder how many writers, well-known today, got their start turning out these sorts of books.
