i remembered: the beginning has to do with a window and a garden and the nearby sea, quite vividly and characteristically described... and some snails and a toad, i think... Woolf is one of those authors who's hard to approach, but has hidden marvels; a good one to read is "Orlando"... i bet you'd like it...
I have a stack of 10 20th century Classics coming up soon and there's a Woolf in there - To the Lighthouse. As it's the only one of hers I have (I think) it seemed like a good place to start.
