I have heard them called "desire lines".
I'd never heard that phrase before but it seems very apt. I think it's a pretty good way to plan the paths in a locality - although presumably you could do it virtually first and get them (mostly) in the right place to begin with.
This is very interesting. In fact, it seems a brilliant. The picture illustrates the concept well.
the shortest distance between two points...?
@ Brian: I think it's a very smart idea. People get to know their environment and naturally find the best way to navigate around it. Once the pattern settles the authorities come it and make it more permanent/hard wearing.
@ Mudpuddle: Usually but not always. People tend not to walk in straight lines too often.
