Like bird flu and SARS...I remember when the WHO was making such a fuss about avian flu during college. Everyone thought I was nuts for not taking it seriously. (I'd already become suspicious of most everything The News wanted me to think was important back then..)

It's ridiculous to consider the possibility that the mass inoculation of the public might have had anything to do with those diseases not being the threat they were supposed to have been, isn't it?

@ Stephen: I know that WHO are expecting a global pandemic to hit at some point in the next few years. You can imagine if they spotted what might be one in its early stages and did nothing and thousands/millions of people died. There's always a strong temptation to call it early just in case - of course it does make you look like the boy who cried wolf.... or in this case pig.

@ Fred: Inoculation - that's one of the reasons I get a flu shot each year... plus the fact that I was *really* ill (frighteningly so) two years in a row and really don't want to go through that again!

@ Mudpuddle: Me too. MUST arrange one for this week if I can. As a member of a non-risk group I have to pay for it but it's only pocket change really.

@Fred: Was the American public inoculated against it? All I can remember is the newspapers promising the epidemic would hit us, and it never did. I don't think it was discussed on the science news podcasts I listened to at the time, though..(Skeptics Guide to the Universe and This Week in Science).

I just did a little googling and apparently there was a big drive here. Even POTUS had one. I stand corrected!

Stephen--the swine flu yes, in Tucson anyway. I remember because that was the last time I ever got a flu shot.
