Perhaps it has to be direct...rather like that snake in Harry Potter that could kill with a look, but no one looked at directly. The people who were Petrified all looked at it indirectly --through water, through a mirror, through a semi-transparent ghost..

Perhaps moonlight is not bright enough or perhaps those who created the myth were not bright enough.

@ Mudpuddle: I certainly have seen anyone I recognised as a vampire but I'm usually @ home at night.
@ Fred: Only dino's I've seen are either stuffed or animatronic.
@ James: I guess vampires use moonlight to safely top up their tans so they don't look so pale all the time.
@ Stephen: Good point. I suppose on the night(s) of the full moon if you see someone wearing sunglasses they're probably a vamp.
