Although there are the typical "correlation not equal to causation" problems, my guess is that the correlation in this case is pointing to something very real. I'm sure most of us don't sleep anywhere near enough. For one thing, if we need a clock to wake us up each morning, something's probably amiss.

Good question. I guess they asked people with chronic diseases (among other things) how long the slept on average and came up with this graph.
