Luckily - coming from a poor background - the State funded my education up to and including College and gave me a grant (not a LOT but almost enough) to go to University as well as paying my tuition for three years. My post-grad stuff I payed for myself but then I've been working for decades and can afford that kind of thing now.
Our present system of Student Loans would have probably put me off even applying for Uni back in the 80's.
It is terrible here. Absolutely terrible. For a bachelor's and master's degree I owe a combined total of about $140K. And I am a public school teacher, so those loans are getting paid back never. However, because of my specialized area (behavior disorders) and the fact that I teach in a self-contained classroom (meaning all 10 of my kids are diagnosed as emotionally disturbed, among other things), and I am in a public service position, as long as I make payments on my loans for ten years, everything will be forgiven at the end of those ten years.
Unless, of course, trumplethinskin and company kill the loan forgiveness programs - which is entirely possible.
WOW.... That's a LOT of money - Over £108K!!!! I left Uni with about £2-3K in debt after my BA and each of my Masters degrees cost me about £3K - but I paid for them upfront. I'm amazed that *anyone* goes to University in the US!
I’m on the same program as Sarah, which is why I teach for nearly non-existent wages. My time is up next Fall, we’ll see if they forgive the balance or try to pull a fast one.
