What we're basically seeing is a long running war between Iran and Saudi Arabia generally fought through proxies. Once you get your head around that singular fact most other things in the Middle East start falling into place...
Hasn't Israel been co-operating with the Saudi's against Iran. After all - no one but Israel is possibly allowed to have nukes. It'd destabilise the region!

Israel is less "non-aligned" and more "A pox on both your houses", heh.
