When I was younger I always wanted to live in NYC and sit out on the fire escape at night and watch over the city. Then I got a little older and saw scary episodes of Law and Order: SVU, where rapists and murderers entered apartments through the fire escapes, and I still wanted to have one, but I would also lock my windows, have an alarm, and a giant guard dog.
It is very evocative of NYC isn't it? If I lived somewhere like that I'd have bullet-proof glass and HUGE locks on those windows! Must be nice in the summer though - sitting out there & chatting to people in the apartments around you, drink in hand....
