One of my first jobs when I moved here almost 30 years ago was the organisation of the moving of some computer servers into our new facility. So I went to see them in place. The room - which included servers from multiple organisations - was about the size of a few basketball courts and each set of servers was located in its own spot which was edged in bright read/yellow/orange lines. The servers were about 7-8 feet tall and made quite a noise as we passed them. We turned a corner and the Manager pointed to the servers I was interested in. They'd been recently upgraded, he said. So, in this edged off area about the size of a couple of decent parking spaces was three 'desktop' servers that you could fit in the boot of your car with space to spare! I laughed... a LOT.

that must be in the early sixties or late fifties... i toured Stanford's computer installation back then and the machines looked just like that...
1955 apparently.
