there's something really weird about those sails: the mains are where the royals are supposed to be and they're upside down... and the topgallants are too big...
The painting is called 'The Stages of Life' (German: Die Lebensstufen) and is an allegorical oil painting of 1835 by the German Romantic landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich.
Maybe he didn't know too much about ships or maybe the sails are the allegorical bit...?
