Countries are often like people, they're born, live, expand, contract and from time to time disappear - sometimes for a while and sometimes forever. Boundaries change, 'ownership' changes, sometimes old empires become a host of independent states. I think the name for the process is *History* [grin].
I already said something similar when Russia "acknowledged" the parts that wanted to leave the Ukraine as "sovereign states". I wondered whether they'd say the same for the provinces that want to leave Russia. ;)
The word 'cynical' doesn't really cover Russia's attitude to Ukraine. I just hope that they really, really pay for all the damage and destruction, to say nothing of the horror, they've caused. There's zero excuse for this sort of behaviour. Let's hope that they'll be regretting the decision to invade for generations to come and it'll stand as an example to others.
I don't think the right people will pay for what they did. Look at WWII, the agitator committed suicide and we still have to suffer from the consequences.
I'm hoping that won't be the case this time. I'm hoping that there will be a war crimes tribunal and that people - high-up people - will be held accountable for their actions. I'm hoping that a long list of people will realise that the moment they step off a plane, almost anywhere in the world, they'll be arrested and sent to the International Criminal Court. I'm hoping that things like what's happening in Ukraine are only read about in history books.... I can hope..... it's not like we don't have other problems to deal with. It does make me despair sometimes, but that might just be getting old.
