I am so glad I do not have to dress like this...though I am pretty sure I still would not have, had I lived then.

From a modern standpoint Victorian & Edwardian dresses are, however pretty from todays standards, seemingly designed to *confine*. They are complex (imagine needing to go to the bathroom in an evening gown!!), heavy and generally constricting. I think just walking around in one would be pretty exhausting. Imagine needing to *run* in one....

Of course living were we do - at the shallow end of the economic pool - the dresses would be MUCH simpler and lighter. Still pretty constricting though - unless you worked on the land maybe?

Exactly! And I can not be confined by anything!!

...and, of course, that level of control was deliberate. No one designs things like that by accident. No wonder that corsets stopped being used (generally) around WW1 and more comfortable/practical garments became the norm following the Suffragette era.
