Morgan Wade has been having some fun with the eighties vibe. Pushes her a little too deep into pop territory from the 'cigarettes and whisky' kind of country I like, but would be curious if you like her:

Not too bad, but it didn't feel particularly 80's to me... But then I'm thinking more UK based 80's music. Yes, it was rather poppy although I'm generally not a huge fan of C&W to be honest. Maybe I just haven't listened to enough of it...??

That's VERY different from the other stuff she's done. As far as country goes, there are so many different varieties. Some people will say they hate it because all they've heard is the pop crap on the radio -- and that's been true since the 1990s. A lot of it is "Hell yeah, we're country!" type identity music where it's celebrating riding ATVs and fishin', that sort of thing. That's fluffy nonsense. I'll listen to it from time to time (the 90s stuff is nostalgic, and some of the fluffy nonsense is fun driving music), but most of what I listen to doesn't make it to commercial radio. I find it on youtube and spotify in niche channels like Gems on VHS, Western AF, etc.

If you're curious, here's a couple of different artists:

Cody Jinks, "Hippies and Cowboys". Heard this guy on Spotify and now I have his CDs. Jinks is described as "outlaw" country -- something like what Willie Nelson and Merle were doing back in the eighties, trying to fight back against the Travis Tritt/Billy Ray Cyrus sound that was emerging.

Sierra Ferrell, "Elk River Blues". Was going to share "Rosemary" because it tells a story (it's a murder ballad), but here you get Sierra and a fiddle. Sierra describes her music as "old time", so she's trying to root herself in the sound that came BEFORE "country" as we know it (Hank Williams and all that followed) developed. "Old time" is used to describe the folk musical tradition of the pre-radio south.

Kiefer Sutherland has come a long way since his wastrel parts in the 80s.

@ Stephen: I preferred the Cody Jinks to the Ferrell song. He was definitely much more my style. I could listen to him for fun. I do like what I call 'Working Class music' which is why I like The Blues so much. It did actually remind me, and YouTube prompted me, about the Hell of High Water soundtrack. The two tunes I listen to today were:

Outlaw State of Mind by Chris Stapleton and Sleeping on the Blacktop by Colter Wall, both of which I like a lot.

@ James: He has indeed! Not the hugest fan to be honest, but I have enjoyed some of his stuff. 'Lost Boys' is definitely one of my favourite vampire movies.

I've been inspired to re-watch it on Amazon Prime. SO dated.... but FUN.
