Nostalgic music!

Indeed. Prompted by this news:

Mary Weiss, lead singer of the 1960s pop group The Shangri-Las, has died at the age of 75, her record label said.

Although my music decade is the 80's, I do like quite a lot of the often ground-breaking music from the 60's and 70's too. The girl bands from both eras were amongst my favourites - including The Shangri-Las.

I hadn't heard that. I grew up on the music of the fifties and sixties, and the Shangri-Las were a favorite -- especially "Leader". Twisted Sister did a cover from the male POV, I think.

I'm a *huge* fan of the female voice so the 'girl bands' of the era had a bit musical impact on me. There were SO many great bands out there! Most of them were 'manufactured' for the market, but they still made some very memorable hits.

I liked how the musicians of that era would often do 'response' songs, or songs that were answers to others, like "Stay at home Sue" and "Tell Tommy I Miss Him" as responses to "Runaround Sue" and "Tell Laura I Love Her". I suppose the closest thing we have now is rappers referencing one another, though one young woman on youtube has done two songs building off of "Hey There Deliliah" that provide both tragedy (Hey It's Delilah) and then joy and understanding (Hey It's Delilah (Again) ). Jessica Ricci, I think her name is. I was grumpy about the first one turning Hey There into a tragedy, but when I gave the third one a try my perspective completely changed.

I like the idea of 'playing' with songs like that. Fun! I keep meaning to read more about music... But then again, I keep meaning to read more of everything! [lol]

Stephen, I just went to listen to both those songs from Jessica Ricci. There’s so beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
