As the militarization of the police since the 1970s in the US has shown. A lot of cops are former military, too, which during the WoT was especially bad because they were going from warzones to city streets.
Its never really a good idea to militarise the police. You'll probably need special police units (or access to special military units that the police can use for things like hostage situations - I've actually just picked up the latest account of the SAS operation @ the Iranian embassy siege) but building an entire police force on that basis is not only unnecessary and *very* expensive but tends to be counter-productive.
The quote is actually from an early episode of Battlestar Galactica Series 1.
Exactly. One reason (of many) why I like our police to be unarmed in the main.
I did see an armed cop recently in my local supermarket - they pop in there because we're just off the motorway. He noticed me looking at his holstered gun and I said "That's a Glock, isn't it?" He then enthusiastically told me what model it was and said that they'd just got the latest version.... Then asked me if I knew about firearms.... Nice guy! I'm sure if he could he'd have got the thing out to show me how cool it was [lol]

When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail....or, if you have a tank, every home is a "compound" to be blown apart!
