You can only really pull that sort of thing with some people. Trying it on others usually ends badly... Or worse.... Plus whatever happens you look like a dick...
I think that most knowledgeable people over 40 will know of it - plus just about everyone in London. I used to work not too far from Horse Guards Parade when I worked in the capital.

I would think these days most people would go "WTF is horse guards? You got a horse stable security guard friend?"
